Dancehall Pop Clash, Who is taking notes from Who

Dancehall and what I like to call Dancehall Pop or cross over is mad competitive.especially in the female category.  I  recently made an observation with the new generation of superstars Nicki Minaj and Shensea and their latest releases, stricking similarities.

First Lets look at Niki Minaj's "Megatron",  a bouncy track infused with Danny Browne's produced "Filthy" riddim made famous by Mr. Vegas and his Heads High track.
Megaton is the first single for her soon to be released album, by her deifinition Megatron means "the baddest"and she  takes the opportunity especially in the last verse to tell you why sexually she has going on (maybe TMI) . Oh and by the way it features no surprise her fiance Kenneth Petty.  We like the crossover poential and the homage to old school dancehall but not so sure this one is a hit

Then lets look at Niki's whip and Shensea's whip jus for reference

Shensea just got signed to Interscope and the first single with her new label is "Blessed" with fellow label mate and hip hop superstar Tyga. Producced by Rvssian Jamaica wonder producer, lets jump in to her single and watch Blessed

Ok lets break it down, Niki's Chours Bratta brrrat,  Shensea Chorus  Raaata Rattata.  Both sporting high end sports cars. Both in tropical exotic locations Shnesea in Mobay, Niki in the studio but the sets are both tropical , choregography both Dancehall at its best, old school  school stylee

Niki famous in the early part of her career for teasing her bisexuality. Shensea obviously being provacative by having a controversial opening scene with a scantily clad womna lying in her bed.....hmmmm. My how the music has come along way a leading dancehall artist suggesting switching it up and still respected in the dancehall, let a male DJ try that....it not going to go the same way. Even more interesting with Rastarfari intro and outro of the video no one thought rasta support dem tings. Both videos have red neon lights sets and the lists goes on and on. So who is coping who and who wins this round......Mmaaaad.

Can you take a Serious Message from Lil Dicky

Wha Gwann Mad People, its Feel Good Friday Again. We  mix it this week with a hip hop tune. Many of you may not know Lil Dicky. Lil Dicky because (Well You Know).

Aka David Burd he is a fairly well known underground rapper and comedian. He got his first big break with the release of the music video for "Ex-Boyfriend", which went viral with more than one million views on YouTube in 24 hours. He actually is a good rapper not a gimmcky clown but his deal is to play it off.

In more recent times he has become more main stream with the funny yet damn catchy single with Chris Brown "Freaky Friday"

But hold on he has carried his skills to another level. He last week released his latest project. We love the "Earth". A cutesy but definitely not folksy video (more closer to R than Lion King PG)  showcasing his rapping style, comedy pacing and of course a good message about climate change and global warming. Kinda long but it plays out more like a short movie and is very entertaining.  Maaaad..... we nahh lie this video shaaat

Freestyle to the Max with Harry Mack

Whaddup My Maad Peeps, talent is talent, the art form is Freestyle, lyrics off the dome, Soca  call it Ex-Tempo, Dancehall calls it building a vibes but whatever name you give it, its a beauty to behold in its purest form. We found this rags to (almost) riches story. Meet Harry Mack  who up to last year only had 1,000 followers on his YouTube page and was a struggling artist freestyling on Venice Beach, California. Then as destiny would have it he first appeared on YouTube  in March this year  and created a buzz, especially in the Hip Hop community.  Check this out.......
Then he came back for more ...this man is badddd, or as our US brothers would say he niiiice

So based on the viral reponse to his 1st video he began to BLOW UP  making appearances on Ellen and LA'sPower 106. Then he moved from working for tips to being a star. You probably seen him on the new Mistubshi Commercial and didnt know his story. Harry Mack destined for MAAAD TINGS,

Thats what we call MAAAD Music

Big Shaq with More Fire

Whaddup Mad Music fans been gone for a minute but back in the spot with more Mad Music to blow up your speakers.

Well we told you about Biq Shaq when he just BUSS and now 267M Youtube views later the Man Still Not Hot.

So here comes the baddest follow up, fresh out of the studio "Man Don't Dance". Boasting a better flow and a bad ass beat this seems a worthy second single to his successful debut. I predict this one is destined for Higher Heights on the radio and in the dance as the Big Shaq character continues his rise in this crazy music industry.

You cant deny this one and when the video comes out it going to Shell, Shell Shell, maaaaaad......Skidiki-pap-pap. Skrrrrah!

One of the Best Dancehall songs out of T. Dot - Numba 1

This is the best version of a John Holt tune EVER.

Time for some maaad history, the song "The Tide Is High" a 1967 song written by the late John Holt, originally performed by the Jamaican group The Paragons, of which John Holt was the lead singer.

The song gained international attention in 1980, when a version by the American band Blondie became a US/UK number one hit. The British girl group Atomic Kitten also had a number one hit with their version of the song in 2002, but for us the BADDEST and MADDEST versions of the song was the hit for Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall released in 2008.

Kardnial over the years is known as the top producer of reggae and dancehall music in Toronto, and has a rich and successful history of songs and association with top Jamaican acts.

This one is probably the best produced dancehall songs out of the T. Dot (after Snow's Informer) Kardinal and Keri Hilson have upgraded this song to a maaaad danceable banger. Produced by Supa Dups of Black Chiney fame.

The album version features Rih Rih but there are three other versions, the second is the original version, featuring Nicole Scherzinger. A third version features Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger. The fourth version is the official single and features Keri Hilson. There is also a mash-up version which features Rihanna, Nicole Scherzinger and Keri Hilson. (different versions because of music politics)

Dis ya song that makes you nod ur head  uncontrollably which in case you didn't know is a good thing.......maaad infectious

Look out the video features the "To di world" dance made subsequently famous by Usain Bolt as his trademarked Lightning Bolt pose.

Maaaad  I love this song, everything works for this one

Only if you are a true Hip Hop fan, the History of Hip Hop in 60 minutes

Yes Maad Music fans we have a gem for you true Hip Hop heads, whether you were born in the 60s,70s,80s and even some of y'all in the 90s will find these songs bring back some great memories.

538 songs jam packed into 60 minutes by our favourite DJ Jaguar Skills as featured on BBC 1XTRA it covers the period 1979 to 2009 that’s 30 years of massive hits. An amazing mix of just 60 minutes, we recommend you just put this in the background on your Ipod or desktop and turn it up LOUD. This mix is the the best so far we have to a jump back in a hip-hop time machine.

We love this  mix it is maaaaaaaad and we are 110% percent you will love it too

If you  are good try and identify every song  but if you have any doubts  and want the track listing  send us a post this page or at bigtingsmusic@gmail.com.
A little bit of hip hop history which some of you might know, Hip Hop  has a strong Jamaican roots, it was originally started by Jamaican born DJ Kool Herc in the early 1970 and it is widely accepted as the origin of the culture where Herc would mix samples of existing records with his own shouts to the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of the music form and introduced New York to the the concept of toasting an art form of the 60s and 70s done by reggae pioneers such as U-Roy or King Stitt who would toast or "rap" to the version side of popular records on the sound systems of the time in Jamaica.

Who is Macklemore and why is this song so popular

He has the number 1 song in America right now but surely he must be the rapper you never heard of, this off beat named rapper is Macklemore the artist behind that bouncy song with the horn infused hook that is "Thrift Shop".

The song's success is noteworthy as it is the first in the last 22 years that an independent artist has topped the Billboard Hot 100 without a major label.

Mackelmore is a Seattle hip-hop rapper who performs along with his producer Ryan Lewis.

Who is this artist well, he was born Ben Haggerty in Seattle, Washington in 1983, Macklemore was your typical white kid who loved Wu-Tang Clan and Nas and in 2000, he recorded his first EP, Open Your Eyes, under the moniker Professor Macklemore. nothing major happened until his career really took off in 2010, when he teamed up with producer Ryan Lewis, and the duo worked on VS. Redux EP.

The duo really got big time buzz when in October 2012, they released their first studio album "the Heist" which includes this hit song.

The wildly popular video has been viewed more than 170 million times on Youtube and reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling more than 2.2 million copies.

The song,is really just celebrating common sense about spending money at the local Salvation Army instead of at the mall or some boutique. But lyrics aside this is a good example of a song  with a catchy beat, a madly infectious saxophone loop, verses that most people can't follow but a sing along chorus makes it for a formula for success.

It has a mad energy and flow that we find refreshing.

Peep the video note this version is NSFW (contains profanity that you probably didn't here in the radio version)

Mad  Music note, the singer of that catchy chorus is Seattle based Michael Wansley, known better as “Wanz,” a 51-year-old music vet who had never cracked the Hot 100 before much less reached the number 1 spot.
Wansley had a full-time job as a Software Test Engineer, testing out new applications and had music as a hobby.  Now having given up his day job after all these years he is know out on tour with Macklemore’s crew, performing to  audiences bigger than he’d ever seen in his life, the music industry sure is maaaad..

B-Boying should be an Olympic sport

B- Boying or Break dancing has survived over the years from the early days in New York and the movies like Krush Grove and Electric Boogaloo to now being a worldwide phenomenon. Its growth is even more visible in particular in Europe where it is still a respected and revered art form and culture.

Indeed the competitions and battles take on an epic sense as the venues for some of these events are held in arena type facilities akin to gladiators in an arena.

Anyways the athleticism, dance skill and pure b-boying is captured in this clip taken in Holland
check it out and look for the double flip close to the end,,,its maaaaaad.

B- boying for London in 2012 right after men's floor exercise and lets see who has the real talent.

Her is an additional clip that features the final 1 on 1 battle of the year set in France in 2010.

Will Smith brings da brand new funk...kinda

Will Smith is known in modern time for his "Big Willie" persona as embodied in blockbusters like Men in Black, Independence Day, Bad Boys and list goes on and on. But lets take step back in time when Fresh Prince was a rapper and a good one too.

We think the album "He is the DJ and I'm the Rapper" ranks as one of the best rap albums of the time. EVERY single track is good, listen to the album front to back and you will not be disappointed, the energy and creativity is maaaad off the chain.

One of the better tracks "Brand New Funk" is timeless it features a funky James Brown sample  and highlights the persona that made Will the mega superstar he became. The song respected by hip hop fans also showcases the legendary turntable talent that is DJ Jazzy Jeff. Interesting factoid, DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Cash Money are credited in making the transformer scratch famous.

So timeless is the beat that DJ Jazzy Jeff paid homage to the classic with underground Philly rapper, Peedi Peedi in 2007....enjoy....maaad

Drifting with M.I.A

Just in case you missed her Super Bowl antics our favourite bad girl rapper is back, MIA.

MIA pardon the pun has been missing in action since her monster hit "Paper planes" but she returns with another hot song "Bad girls live fast die young bad girls do it well"....maaad

The visuals on this video are outstanding and the stunts impressive.

What we like about the video is that it features a practice little known in the western world called  Tafheet or Hajwalah  which is an Arab style drifting which has been around for many years and is very popular in Saudi Arabia.

Tafheet popularly known elsewhere in the world as Middle East drifting, is a dangerous motorsport phenomenon that involves trying to drift a car at very high speeds around 110-135mph.

Some of the more popular tafheet techniques include:
  • "Ta'geed": turning the car a full 360 degrees
  • "Tanteel": which is to wiggle the rear wheels left and right at high speed.

So as we were saying this kind of drifting isn't new but a common practice. Here is another video which shows the crazy madness, shooting AK-47s  drifting around regular traffic, trucks, gas tankers  and even a school bus, this is really the wild wild "east" ....maaaad.
